Sports & Properties, Inc. (SPI) of Cary has been selected as the host organization for the 2011 U.S. Figure Skating Championships to be held at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex in Greensboro, North Carolina, January 22-30, 2011.
The Championships are U.S. Figure Skating's premier event and feature 250 of the nation's top skaters competing in women's, men's, pairs, and ice dancing. The Championships receive 10 hours of national network television coverage and are projected to have an economic impact of approximately $30 million in the state of North Carolina.
"We are honored to have been selected by U.S. Figure Skating to conduct their National Championships," said Hill Carrow, CEO of SPI. "This is the sport's largest and most prestigious event, so we are going to be working dilligently to make the Championships shine in North Carolina."
The U.S. Figure Skating Championships, which have been held annually since 1914, crown 12 national champions each year in Novice, Junior, and Senior divisions. Prior national champions include Michelle Kwan, Kristi Yamaguchi, Scott Hamilton, and Brian Boitano. Recent host cities have included Spokane (2007), St. Paul (2008), and Cleveland (2009).
"Figure Skating is the number one Winter Olympic sport around the world, and for the U.S. federation, this is the equivalent of landing their Super Bowl," said Marc Bush, President of the Greensboro Sports Commission. "Done well, this has the potential to be the largest event in the state of North Carolina in 2011. We are thrilled that Sports & Properties has been awarded the 2011 Championships, and we look forward to working with them on a most successful event."
Hill Carrow, CEO of SPI, will serve as General Manager for the Championships. Faryn Driscoll, SPI's Client Services Manager, will serve as Director of Operations. SPI will lead a team management effort that includes the Greensboro Sports Comimssion, Greensboro Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. The Championships are also expected to involve over 300 volunteers.
